september 12th 2017: Klaas Wakker started his career at Piet Brouwer Electrotechnology 15 years ago as a trainee during his senior secondary vocational schooling in automation and energy technology. He stayed on after the traineeship, first on his free days and, after obtaining his diploma, full time.
Klaas started as an all-round mechanic, spent some time working as a foreman in the Yachting department and eventually became project manager for Power Solutions. He has held this position for six years now, and thoroughly enjoys his work. The Power Solutions department specialises in emergency power solutions and power distribution in both low and medium voltage – anywhere in the world. “Every working day is different,” says Klaas. “One day I can be sitting in the office ordering materials and the next I might be activating a diesel generator somewhere in Africa. I have a varied job and am often involved in a project from first customer contact to final delivery of the project.” The project Klaas remembers most vividly is Piet Brouwer Electrotechnology’s first in Congo. “We expanded the existing emergency power system for three generators with a fourth generator, including the associated distribution and control. We had never been to Africa before so lots of things were new to us in terms of both technology and organisation. We first had to figure out the philosophy underlying the existing system, which was a steep learning curve.” Klaas describes Piet Brouwer Electrotechnology as a flexible and no-nonsense kind of place. “There is a down-to-earth attitude here with hardworking people who take great pride in meeting and exceeding customer expectations. This makes Piet Brouwer Electrotechnology truly unique.” When asked whether he thinks working at Piet Brouwer Electrotechnology is fun, Klaas nods enthusiastically. “I love a challenge in both technical and organisational terms, and I really enjoy building and activating our systems in faraway places where limited resources are available.”
