Learn more about electrical engineering issues in our news archive.

Over the past year we have dealt with many topics related to electrical engineering in our newsletters . As we feel that these items may be interesting for you to read, we’ve lined up the subjects for you here:

We are also currently preparing a new article about transformers, various types of which are installed as part of onboard electrical systems. Pieter Baarssen, Project Manager at Piet Brouwer Electrotechnology, will tell you more in this article. If you are interested, please sign up here for our newsletter and we’ll keep you informed about this topic.

CAN BUS AND CONVENTIONAL SYSTEMS COMBINED ONBOARD TWO NEW NO LIMIT 1640 PRO SHIPS

Piet Brouwer Electrotechnology was brought in by No Limit Ships to provide the complete electrical installations onboard two new No Limit 1640 Pro ships. These special vessels were built by No Limit Ships Shipyards, based in Groningen. The first No Limit ship (build number 27) was built as a crew tender for Jan de Nul Dredging. The vessel will spend its first few years as a crew tender but, with a few small adjustments, it can later be converted into a survey vessel. The second No Limit ship (build number 28) was intended as a survey vessel from the outset and commissioned by Fachstelle Maschinenwesen Nord from Germany. Read more

LOAD TEST FOR GENERATORS OFFERS MAXIMUM OPERATIONAL SAFETY ONBOARD NASSIMA

To increase comfort, efficiency and operational safety for engineers and ensure that generators are always able to start, Piet Brouwer Electrotechnology fits crossover boxes on superyachts. It is a familiar problem: The generator starter batteries are empty and the engineer only discovers this fact when trying to start the diesel engine. At such moments there is very little time to carry out the activities required to get the generator set started.

Engineers normally therefore try to start the diesel engine involved using loose starter cables linked to the starter battery set from another diesel engine than the affected generator. To avoid having to carry out such a time consuming solution, Piet Brouwer Electrotechnology recommends installing a crossover box onboard superyachts, as project engineer Hessel Bakker explains. Read more

THE ADDED VALUE OF CROSSOVER BOXES ONBOARD YACHTS

Piet Brouwer Electrotechnology in the Netherlands installs electrical systems onboard commercial vessels and superyachts that always include one or more gensets. An example is the recently delivered superyacht Nassima. To ensure optimal operational safety, a load test was carried out after installation. The 49-metre motoryacht Nassima was built by Acico Yachts, a Dutch yard that has worked with Piet Brouwer Electrotechnology on several projects. Acico Yachts values the high level of reliability of the systems installed by Piet Brouwer Electrotechnology and the transparency of the company’s working methods. The load test is part of the test protocol that is commonly performed before a yacht is delivered, including onboard Nassima. Read more

ENHANCING THE QUALITY OF POWER ONBOARD YACHTS

The quality of the power available onboard yachts has never been more important. Thanks to the modern rectifier technology used in motor drives, UPS systems, battery charging stations, light dimmers and computers, a significant improvement in comfort levels has been attained. At the same time, however, these modern technologies have an impact on harmonic distortion in the electrical distribution circuits onboard. Tackling this issue requires a specialist approach.  Read more
